September Wrap Up

This was the last month of my holidays and I did have a lot of time on my hands to read. Hence I am happy to tell you that I managed to get 9 books done. At first I wanted to say that I am proud (and I still somewhat want to), but then I stumbled across nearly all of your wrap ups and everyone seems to be reading at least ten books a month, or so it seems!

All I Want is Everything by Cecily von Ziegesar

Kindle Edition | 225 pages | Gossip Girl #3 | 2003 | Chick Lit, YA, Contemporary | 3 out of 5 stars | Goodreads

It’s Chrismastime and Blair and Serena are best friends again and up to their old tricks–partying hard and breaking hearts from Park Avenue to the Caribbean. Blair’s mom and Cyrus are having their honeymoon in Salt Key. And when school lets out for the holiday, Blair, Serena, Aaron, and company head down there to blow off steam after their midterm exams. In between Pina Coladas and topless sunbathing, Blair and Serena plot revenge on super-jerk Chuck Bass. Everyone jets back to NYC for Serena’s New Year’s party, during which Nate and Blair may or may not finally go all the way, and Serena may or may not be discovered to be the secret fling of Hollywood’s hottest young leading man.

Beware of (mild) spoilers! There isn’t a lot of stuff happening that would count as being spoilers and isn’t mentioned in the synopsis. Actually, let us start off with the synopsis. It is so bad, let me tell you! It makes it sound awfully eventful and exciting, but it really isn’t. Was I not even paying any attention or when did they plan any revenge on Chuck Bass? Who didn’t even appear in this book to an extent I would have liked.

Within one chapter and maybe one page we also get the answer to the question of Nate and Blair getting back together. (very spoiler-y stuff in white) They shortly stand together at a bar, smoking. Jenny shouts at Nate for half a minute and then leaves them. Blair now thinks he is a loser and goes away, too. That’s it. Ugh!

The characters were unlikable, not like they are in the TV show, where they are glamorous and all. They were trying to portray these fabulous ideas of characters. The fact that they all smoked nonstop didn’t make it that much better, too. They didn’t take care of themselves while not caring about anyone else either. They just want to have fun and they don’t even give the slightest care in the world about the feelings of others, while being the most pretentious teenagers can be.

The story was very character-driven. The story strongly focuses on Nate being stoned and always thinking about Blair and how hot her ass is while he is in a relationship with Jenny who has these gigantic boobs. Other than that Dan was one of the most pretentious characters, with unbelievable amounts of luck for getting his (extremely stupid) poem published, while constantly drinking, smoking and not taking showers or changing clothes and humiliating his girlfriend.

The writing is flimsy and has a distinctive style. Although the narrator is omniscient, after a certain character is named, the following few sentences will be out of the perspective of said character. Mentioning their thoughts and opinions.

Addtionally, you have no chance of forgetting anything, since it keeps repeating itself quite a lot. After a character is introduced again or something happens, at least one line follows describing an event in the past that this character was involved in.

Blair observed as she watched her ex-boyfriend, Nate Archibald, dancing with Jennifer Humphrey, the short and extremely buxom ninth grader for whom Nate had unexplainably ditched Blair only a few weeks ago.

It was a strange thing for Serena to say. After all, she and Nate had lost their virginity together behind Blair’s back the summer after tenth grade.

Since I was reading it on my Kindle I could easily look up all the words I didn’t know, and there were many of them. An interesting and different language to some part, for me personally. There was much namedropping, which made it fancier and was well fitting for the whole novel. I didn’t find it to be annoying, although many seem to do.

Let us now compile a short list of things that I found to be problematic and negative in this novel:

Calling girls sluts for varying (invalid) reasons

Girls (and boys I think) are being way too objectified

Saying stuff is gay as a way to say it is uncool or stupid

No actual gays

Apparently K as well as are POC in the TV show as far as I know, however either they changed it, it was mentioned in the earlier two novels, which I cannot remember too well or it wasn’t described very well in this one

So, did I like it? I fear so, yes. As stupid as it may sound, I can see how problematic this novel was but I still enjoyed it to some extent. When I wasn’t annoyed with it anyway. I liked the overall feeling and I am curious to find out more, since not a lot of stuff happened. Will I continue with this series? Yes, for at least one more volume, which will hopefully make me feel better about the whole series.

Top Ten Tuesday | Favorite Manga of All Time

Top Ten Tuesday | Favorite Manga of All Time

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted and created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a bookish topic for which one can create a list of 10 (or more or less) items that fit said theme! This week’s amazing topic is:

September 13: Top Ten ALL TIME Favorite Books Of X Genre (I know, I know. Picking all time faves. I’m MEAN. But I like knowing people’s definitive faves). Can also break it down into sub-genre if that helps?

I’ve been wanting to do a list like this for a long time now. Although I love books with a deep passion, I have been reading a lot of manga (which I also somewhat consider to be books) for the last few years. At first I wanted to do my favorite classics of all time, but this seems way more fun and a little different! If you have never read any manga, but are interested in it, let these be my recommendations for you on where to start!

If you want to know all of the manga that I’ve read so far and that I still want to read, you can check out my Manga List on MyAnimeList here. In this post, the overall series are considered, not single volumes. For some, I have not yet finished all of the volumes, but I love them passionately already. Additionally, here you can see my Manga Stats from my profile on MyAnimeList.

1 Oyasumi Punpun

Asano, Inio (Story & Art) | MAL

13 Volumes | Published 2007 – 2013 | Drama, Slice of Life, Psychological, Seinen

My favorite manga of all time. The best thing I have ever read. I have yet to find a manga I love as much. Forever and ever, Punpun will always hold a special place in my heart.

Punpun Onodera is a normal 11-year-old boy living in Japan. Hopelessly idealistic and romantic, Punpun begins to see his life take a subtle—though nonetheless startling—turn to the adult when he meets the new girl in his class, Aiko Tanaka. It is then that the quiet boy learns just how fickle maintaining a relationship can be, and the surmounting difficulties of transitioning from a naïve boyhood to a convoluted adulthood. When his father assaults his mother one night, Punpun realizes another thing: those whom he looked up to were not as impressive as he once thought.

As his problems increase, Punpun’s once shy demeanor turns into voluntary reclusiveness. Rather than curing him of his problems and conflicting emotions, this merely intensifies them, sending him down the dark path of maturity in this grim coming-of-age saga.

2 Dead Dead Demon’s Dededededestruction

Asano, Inio (Story & Art) | MAL

Still Publishing | Comedy, Drama, School, Sci-Fi, Slice of Life, Seinen

Large mysterious alien ships have been looming above Japanese towns for three years, filling the sky. Everything changed three years ago. And yet, nothing has changed.

No weapon used against the invaders’ ships had any success, beyond destroying part of japan and leaving its economy in shambles. JSDF is fighting a guerrilla battle against the aliens all over Japan. America is joining the “war” effort with more aggressive tactics, dividing Japan over the pacifist principle laid out in Art9. of their constitution.

But this may just be the mundane story of young middle schoolers.

3 Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui!

Tanigawa, Nico (Story & Art) | MAL

Still Publishing | Comedy, School

Kuroki Tomoko is a super popular, high school girl, who has had 50 years of dating experience, and 100 boys… in the Otome game world. In the real world, she is a 15-year-old shut in, who has all of the qualities of a “mojo” (喪女, a gloomy or unpopular woman).

However, when school isn’t going as she expected, and she isn’t as popular as she had thought she was, she takes a look at herself in the mirror for the first time in a few years, and has some shocking revelations…

4 Elfen Lied

Okamoto, Lynn (Story & Art) MAL

Seeing Yukiteru’s miserable state, Deus gives him a new ability. His diary will now record events that will happen in the near future. Yukiteru is then forced to participate in a game whose winner will become Deus’ successor.

6 Subarashii Sekai

Asano, Inio (Story & Art) | MAL

2 Volumes | Published 2002 – 2004 | Drama, Slice of Life, Seinen

Life is never ordinary. What begins with a college dropout bored of her mediocre routine soon becomes a fantastic series of vignettes about the unexpected ways that lives intersect. Filled with magical realism in the face of the cold reality of modern life, at their core these stories are about discovering something precious in the chaos of existence. A dream recaptured. A life on a new track. The absurdity of death. Laughter in the face of reality. With this series of intersecting vignettes, Inio Asano explores the ways in which modern life can be ridiculous and sublime, terrible and precious, wasted and celebrated.

7 Aku no Hana

Oshimi, Shuuzou (Story & Art) | MAL

11 Volumes | Published 2009 – 2014 | Drama, Romance, School, Shounen, Psychological

One day, he forgets his copy of Les Fleurs du Mal in the classroom and runs back alone to pick it up. In the classroom, he finds not only his book, but Saeki’s gym uniform. On a mad impulse, he steals it.

Now everyone knows “some pervert” stole Saeki’s uniform, and Kasuga is dying with shame and guilt. Furthermore, the weird, creepy, and friendless girl of the class, Nakamura, saw him take the uniform. Instead of revealing it was him, she recognizes his kindred deviant spirit and uses her knowledge to take control of his life. Will it be possible for Kasuga to get closer to Saeki, despite Nakamura’s meddling and his dark secret? What exactly does Nakamura intend to do with him?

8 Girls of the Wild’s

Kim, Hye-Jin (Art), Hun (Story) MAL

Still Publishing Action, Comedy, Drama, Martial Arts, Romance, School, Harem

Basically a manwha, but I will still count it in this list, because it is amazing!

Wild’s High has a 42 year history as an all-girls private high school, meant solely for the elite. The girls of this school are trained daily in some of the deadliest forms of fighting around, from boxing, to sword-fighting, to taekwondo! This specialty school is the place where the most popular sporting event in the country is held, The Wild’s League—the only place in the world where teenage girls partake in brutal fights… often to the death.

This year, Wild’s has changed to a mixed-gender school. Despite opening their doors to males, the only one to apply is Song Jae Gu. He has been granted a full 3-year scholarship regardless of grades, which he snaps up without second thought. For the past two years, every moment of his life has been spent taking care of his younger twin siblings.

But after meeting Queen, the bloody champion of Wild’s League, drenching her in coffee and calling her a “monster”… things are about to get messy—especially when he gets tied up with all the other unusual girls at this school!

9 Ao no Exorcist

Katou, Kazue (Story & Art) | MAL

Still Publishing | Action, Adventure, Demons, Drama, Fantasy, School, Shounen, Supernatural

This world consists of two dimensions joined as one, like a mirror. The first is the world in which the humans live, Assiah. The other is the world of demons, Gehenna. Ordinarily, travel between the two, and indeed any kind of contact between the two, is impossible. However the demons can pass over into this world by possessing anything that exist within it. Satan the god of demons, but there’s one thing that he doesn’t have, and that’s a substance in the human world that is powerful enough to contain him!! For that purpose he created Rin, his son from a human woman, but will is son agree to his plans? Or will he become something else…? An exorcist?

10 Shouri no Akuma

Maki, Youko (Story & Art) | MAL

3 Volumes | Published 2009 – 2010 | Comedy, Romance, School, Shoujo, Gender Bender

Today is Asami Tanakamori’s first day at her new school… but it isn’t exactly what she expected. In fact, it seems really strange right from the beginning!! Asami is finding it incredibly difficult to adjust to this party school, but luckily she has her new friend, a pretty “girl” named Akira Kinoshita. Akira seems to have the entire school at “her” command…but there’s a bit more to Akira than Asami would have ever imagined!

I Messed Up Tag

Oh well, I was already tagged by three people, so it must finally be time to do this tag! Thanks to Joey @ Thoughts And Afterthoughts, Lara @ The Heathen and Tammy @ A Word About Books. Go check out their awesome blogs! Their versions of this tag: Joey, Lara and Tammy. To be honest, I don’t really want to tag anyone for this one once again, since it was quite hard for me to come up with questions and I did not particularly enjoy it. If you feel like this is the tag for you, consider yourself tagged! Let’s get into this!

A Character’s Appearance You Misread or Imagined Differently

Just like Joey sad, characters are also faceless voids to me. I totally get that. The only time they are not is when there is a movie to a book. If I have watched the trailer or know the actors and actresses that will portray certain characters, they will automatically be that character forever and ever. Now, for instance, Shailene Woodley will always be Hazel from The Fault in Our Stars, Josh Hutcherson will always be Steve from Cirque du Freak, Carey Mulligan will always be Kathy from Never Let Me Go as well as Daisy from The Great Gatsby. Well, you get what I am trying to say.

A Character Name You’ve Been Pronouncing Incorrectly

Such hard questions! I think I have had trouble with Tsukuru Tazaki from Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage and Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov from Crime and Punishment, other than that I am fine. Poor Tsatzuki and Raskalniko.

An Overused Trope That Is Your Guilty Pleasure

Love triangles and wealthy leads.

A Cliched Character Type You Enjoy Viewing On Screen Than Reading About

There isn’t one.

A Word/Phrase You Learned Because of Its Use In A Book

I certainly did, but I cannot remember any right now.

Have You Ever Not Read or Completed a Required Reading Book For School

I was a student as good as gold, so of course I haven’t done that! gasps

Have You Ever (Or Wanted To) Skipped A Chapter From the POV of a Character You Weren’t Interested In

No, that’s not something I do. Not because of an uninteresting POV anyway. I once, when I was much younger skipped one chapter of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince when I was reading it for the first time. You know, the chapter where the two are in the cave and a lot of shit goes down. I was so confused because I had skipped that part so eventually I had to go back and read it.

Have You Ever Cancelled Social Plans To Read A Book

I have and I would do it again. Books > Social Events and (most) people

The Questions

Q1. Why did you start a blog in the first place?

As I have mentioned quite a lot of times already, I have always had the desire to express myself. Something about blogs and blogging has been so intriguing ever since I started my journey on the internet. I want to be heard and express my opinions. Now, let me share a secret with you: I have had a blog once, but I didn’t tell anyone. Once I started to get some interactions and followers going on said blog, a friend of mine also discovered it. I deleted it immediately and never talked about it again.

Even now not a single person I know in real life knows that I have this blog here and talk about books. At least I hope so.

Q2. What is your favorite book?

Without a doubt, forever and always, it is The Great Gatsby. My favorite manga of all time is Oyasumi Punpun. I need to mention that because I love both of them with a deep and burning passion.

Q3. What do you dislike the most?

Injustice. Mein Sinn für Gerechtigkeit ist sehr stark ausgeprägt. Ever since I was little I was into anime and with One Piece and Detective Conan as major childhood favorites, I learned from them and their behavior. Which is where I got my sense of justice from.

Q4. What is your favorite food item from the mall?

I am hardly ever at a mall, but if I had to go with something, I would go with those big, cheap slices of pizza.

Q5. What is your favorite pastime?

Reading and sleeping, I do not care how boring this may sound, a lot of you know that these are the best things in the world.

Juliet, Naked by Nick Hornby: Disappointing In The End

Juliet, Naked by Nick Hornby: Disappointing In The End

Annie lives in a dull town on England’s bleak east coast and is in a relationship with Duncan that mirrors the place; Tucker, once a brilliant songwriter and performer, has gone into seclusion in rural America—or at least that’s what his fans think. Duncan is obsessed with Tucker’s work to the point of derangement, and when Annie dares to go public on her dislike of his latest album, there are quite unexpected, life-changing consequences for all three. Goodreads

This book has 400 pages.
It is a Contemporary Fiction novel.
This was an audiobook.
The language I listened to it in was German.
It received 2 out of 5 stars from me.

Beware of spoilers and me ranting about this book! I am going to skip the + part for this one. The things I liked can be compromised in a short list: Annie and Duncan were an interesting, unhappy and lonely couple and a contrast to other bookish couples. | The process of Annie getting to know an idol she has liked for a long time using e-mails. | Travelling with rather untypical locations to visit due to Duncan’s obsession.

– | The Ending

Simply put, this book would have had the potential to end differently. To be either inspiring or a lesson learned for everyone, but it was neither. It could have focused on deep family ties and broken ones getting fixed or an adventure that is in the past now. It wasn’t that either. It was horrible and immature. The Liebster Award #2

I’ve been nominated once again for this award, this time by the lovely Lauren @ Comma Hangover quite a while ago. Thanks a lot! Check out her blog, it’s worth it!

Since this has been done so many times already and I am honestly a little stressed at the moment, I won’t be nominating anyone this time! Thanks to Lauren once again!

My Questions

To be honest, Lauren’s questions were really hard to answer and very well-conceived. I did have some trouble answering them, but overall they were great questions!

If you had to go to a deserted island with only one book, what would it be and why?

Such a hard and mean question, I love so many books! I really don’t like re-reading books, though! I think I would just take any book from my TBR pile with me. At the moment I would grab Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami.

Is there a book you could see so perfectly in your head that you dreamcasted it? Share your cast here!

Nope, sorry. That’s not something I really do. If I have watched the trailer to a movie that was adapted from a book, I will see the characters as said actors and actresses, but it’s hardly ever the other way around.

Name the best opening line from any book that you have ever read!

You all know what this is going to be. The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald starts as follows:

In my younger an more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.

Is there a non-bookish item on your shelf? If so, what is it?

There is a picture of me and my boyfriend as well as some CDs where I keep my books.

Do you eat while reading? What is your favorite snack?

I don’t snack, but as I have already mentioned, I usually read during dinner or lunch when I am alone.

What do you think of books that involve food? Do they make you hungry? Or inspire you to cook?

There are barely any books that would fit that category that I have read. Sometimes if I am curious about food I will look it up, but I don’t think a book has ever inspired me to cook.

What is your favorite micro-genre? (Or subgenre?)

Okay, I had to look up what a micro-genre is. Magical realism, it is!

What social media networks are you on most frequently? Do you promote your posts on there?

I used to be on Twitter a lot with my personal account, but I stopped that once it started to consume too much of my time. Now I have started a new Twitter for this blog, which is still starting off slowly. Other than that I only use Goodreads.

What is the most irritating character you have ever read about? Why were they so irritating?

Holden Caulfield, I don’t even wanna talk about it. Please don’t make me.

What is one book setting that you wish you could visit? Do you keep a bookish travel list?

One of Gatsby’s fancy Jazz parties. I don’t keep a list I think.

How often do you visit your local independent bookseller?

Due to the reason that I have started buying only e-books to reduce the amount of physical books I own, I usually don’t. Once in a while I will check out smaller, lovely booksellers in Graz or Vienna, when I am with my bestie.

Have a nice day and keep reading!
